The Friday Five Gets Nosy

In honor of Tracey's birthday (do go wish her a happy one & come back), we're gonna do a nosy survey (as she occasionally is wont to create). Below are your Five Nosy Survey Questions. They are all travel-related, as my mind has been wandering that way and building up the angst because circumstances like a used book sale thrust upon me (Um, hello? Helping out at the previous one a week or two into the job back in the Spring does not make me qualified to run it!) are conspiring against my having even part of a weekend in August to steal away to the beach. (Boooooo.) So offer up a little peek inside your blogreading noggins and help me do a little vicarious traveling:

1. Road Trips: Love 'em or hate 'em? Feel free to expound.

2. Have you ever done a spur-of-the-moment trip? (Note: Running for the Border does not count.)

3. True or false: I have mad packing skillz.

4. Name your favorite movie about taking a trip. I am fairly flexible about what that includes.

5. Sum up your worst trip ever or worst part of a trip ever in one or two sentences--or, if you're feeling up to the challenge, a haiku. There very well could be a prize for the best response, haiku or not. (This new job thing has me feeling a bit more generous than usual.)

TGIF and happy weekend, everyone!

1. Road Trips: Love 'em or hate 'em? Love them. I appreciate the expediency of flying, but you just get to see our country unless you get out on the road. I grew up driving across the country and it's what I've done with my family since.

2. Have you ever done a spur-of-the-moment trip?
Last minute, yes. Spur-of-the-moment? No.

3. True or false: I have mad packing skillz.
One of my additional duties in the Army was Unit Movement Officer. True.

4. Name your favorite movie about taking a trip.
Roadside Prophets

5. Sum up your worst trip ever or worst part of a trip ever in one or two sentences--or, if you're feeling up to the challenge, a haiku.
Afghanistan saw
Horrible planning for trips
It was hard to wait.

1. Road Trips: Love 'em or hate 'em?
Depends on the leg room. The weird discussions and projects are fun; sitting cross-legged for six hours is not.

2. Have you ever done a spur-of-the-moment trip?
Nope. We once went away with less than a week's notice and even that freaked me out.

3. True or false: I have mad packing skillz.
False. I'm the one saying, "Did anyone happen to bring a spare toothbrush?"

4. Name your favorite movie about taking a trip.
Erm, Shrek is the only thing I can think of. I'll cheat and put a book, though: Walk Two Moons

5. Sum up your worst trip ever or worst part of a trip ever in one or two sentences--or, if you're feeling up to the challenge, a haiku.

Once, miles from nowhere
a small house had a bathroom
where I spent an hour

1. Road Trips: Love 'em or hate 'em?
I tend to love the idea more than the execution.

2. Have you ever done a spur-of-the-moment trip?
Not a leave-this-minute trip, but yes, an I'll-go-to-Canada-tomorrow trip.

3. True or false: I have mad packing skillz.
True. Lists, piles, rarely forget anything. But I am an over-packer by nature.

4. Name your favorite movie about taking a trip.
The Count of Monte Cristo

5. Sum up your worst trip ever or worst part of a trip ever in one or two sentences--or, if you're feeling up to the challenge, a haiku.

Change in Atlanta
Can't leave without a pilot
New Year's in motel

(I've managed to never have to change planes in Atlanta since.)

1. Love road trips. I will load up the car and go darn near anywhere on little or no notice.

2. Well, Does throwing everyone into the car at 1;00 on a friday afternoon and heading to the beach count? That was last Friday. The last long road trip I took was with my college roommate. she and I decided to pack it up and head to Annapolis via U. Del. in Newark. We decided on Wednesday we were leaving on Friday. And we had no where to stay in MD on Saurday.

3. I am goof, but my husband can get 5 lbs. of sh*t in a 2 lb. bag.

4. Probably thelma and Louise. That's all that's coming to me right now.

5. Three hundred miles yet
you three are stressing me out
we just left our house

1. Love them.

2. Oh yes. I think my personal best was getting a phone call and then Sammy and I were on the road in 20 minutes.

3. True. Friends have commented "that's all you're taking?" and then been amazed at all that I unpacked.

4. In jest: "Duel". I have the road trip experience to have put that evil trucker in his place in about 5 minutes. Good drinking game movie though. :)

5. Middle seat, no sleep
three cities, a four-day blur
Where the heck am I?

1. Road Trips: Mostly hate them. I don't know they make me tense.

2. Have you ever done a spur-of-the-moment trip?
Not really. Last minute, however, that's my life. lol
3. True or false: I have mad packing skillz.
Having moved this weekend, no. But most of the time, yes.

4. Name your favorite movie about taking a trip.
Natty Gann. A wonderful kids movie that I still like!

5. Sum up your worst trip ever or worst part of a trip ever in one or two sentences--or, if you're feeling up to the challenge, a haiku.
First flight,
all alone with soggy shoes
not yet 22 (actually 17)
overbooked, what to do?

I am loving these responses!

Cullen--wow, thanks for sharing your post (and summarizing in haiku).

Charli--yeah, why do we always forget the toothbrush? And would you believe "Walk Two Moons" is still widely read in schools in my area? I haven't read it. Yet.

ccr--List person over here. "Count of Monte Cristo"? I am intrigued.

Amy--why does it seem the men do better with packing? Is it that we women are worried about crushing stuff? "we just left our house"--one time my mom was so harried by us kids' fighting that she backed the station wagon out of the garage with the hatch still open. It broke.

Dave--20 minutes? Impressive! Tell me more about this drinking game. . .

AC22--Dude, I have not thought about Natty Gann since 7th grade. Soggy shoes??? I flew home from Mexico City by myself at 15 and was traumatized by the smart-mouthed British flight attendant who said a whining kid needed a "smack across the lips." (Gutsy.)

My answers:
1. Love road trips, but prefer riding shotgun.

2. Not really anything pulled together quickly enough to call it spur of the moment. There was a cheesesteak run after a social event for a bible study group one time. That's about it. I'm more of a "drag-ee" than a "drag-ger."

3. False. In spite of extensive lists, I have forgotten major things like pajamas or eyeglasses. And making things fit? Uh-uh.

4. You gotta love "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." My brother's fave lines: "You're going the wrong way!" "How does he know which way I'm going!?"

5. No family trip
Was ever complete without
Dad shouting at Mom.

(I'm fine; keep the comments coming.)

It's a simple game: Each time the Dennis Weaver character does something stupid you have to take a drink. The arguments over whether something was stupid or not was more fun than the movie.
